Paris Saint-Germain Edges Marseille in a Shootout to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now claimed the season-opening cup on fourteen separate times.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a dramatic leveler followed by a perfect penalty shootout to get past Marseille in the Gulf and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions title.

The European champions seemed to be sailing towards a comfortable win in the match between the French league champions and the French Cup winners after Ousmane Dembele found the scoring early on.

Yet, Marseille struck two times in the closing moments to seize a surprise advantage. Initially, Mason Greenwood converted from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable twist of fortune, the Portuguese striker grabbed a vital leveler in the final moments to force the contest into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the hero, saving decisive kicks from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all converted successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a convincing penalty win.

Now 14-time champions Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after completing a domestic double, have now lifted this trophy for the twelfth time in the last 13 years.
