Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several entry passages down to the facility... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their valour," Healey commented. "Including them were thousands of British troops stationed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the US military executed what it termed a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, after an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
