Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
